When his wife and her lover get murdered, Andy Dufresne’s life changes drastically. Despite denying the deed, the former successful banker is convicted to two life sentences in Shawshank State Penitentiary. Although he must endure a terrible first night and life in general isn’t easy at all in the prison, Andy learns to cope with the new circumstances over the years. He also befriends some fellow inmates, with one of them being the contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding who helps him getting along with the daily routines and other prisoners. The self-proclaimed innocent even finds distraction when he starts to work in the laundry. However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows during his time in prison. Andy is being frequently sexually assaulted by the gang “the sisters”, the guards are of no use at all as especially the warden and the captain of the guard likes to make his stay miserable. Will Andy be able to stand up to the challenges? The path to redemption is long and difficult. |
It’s a simple story elegantly, cleverly told, not to mention expertly acted. (Boston Globe)
